Making the Most out of These Last Weeks of Summer

We’ve lived here in southern Alberta for all our lives, and we can’t ever remember an August that’s been toastier than the one we’re experiencing right now. What a scorcher of a month it’s been! All this sun and heat has made for a beautiful season filled with hot afternoons and long, warm summer evenings. We recently spent some time on this blog chatting about sun safety and how to keep your baby cool when the mercury rises, so today, we thought we’d take a moment to talk about some of the fun activities you and baby can get up to this August to keep cool, have fun, and make the most out of these last few weeks of summer. So, jump right in and read on for more – the water’s fine, we promise!

Splish, Splash, Fun!

When it’s this hot outside, the best way to have fun and keep cool all at once is to dive into some water-themed fun! There are plenty of places to take a dunk around town that are both family-friendly and perfect for your little one, including outdoor splash parks, wading pools, and more! Does packing up and heading out to a public venue seem like a monumental undertaking in this August heat? No sweat – just bring the pool to you! Backyard kiddie pools are a great way for baby to enjoy some supervised cool-off time in the water – and if the sun gets too hot for comfort, you’re just steps away from the shelter of your own home. Last one in’s a rotten egg!

Explore our City’s Beautiful Parks and Playgrounds

Whether you’re looking to discover that new special playground or are just eager to get out there and experience our city’s natural beauty, there’s a park out there just waiting for you and your little one! Calgary is home to over 8000 hectares of green spaces and 800km of paths, walkways, and trails to explore, so if you’re looking for a change of scenery, take an afternoon this August to head out there and discover all the fun, beauty, and nature that’s right here in our own backyard.

Keeping Cool Indoors

Having fun in the sun is all well and good, but with some of the temperatures we’ve seen lately, even just thinking about going outside makes us feel a little melty! Not only that, but was we discussed in our blog this past July, heat as intense as we’ve recently experienced can be dangerous for your little ones, who are much more susceptible to the risks that these skyrocketing temperatures present than we are. Don’t despair, though – just because you’re keeping to the cool environs of your home doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some summer-themed fun!

Want to go for a splash? Bring the pool indoors with a fun water activity table that will keep your kids both cool and entertained all at once! Whether you buy one from a store or create one at home, these entertaining activity centres are the perfect solution to a summer’s afternoon stuck indoors.

If your little one is creatively-inclined, beat the heat this August by exploring some fun summertime crafts! There are plenty of great little projects out there that are perfect for toddlers’ tiny hands, and almost all of them involve items you’ve got just kicking around the house, making for an entertaining and economical August afternoon.

However you’re planning to spend these last few weeks of summer, we hope they’re full of sun, fun, and plenty of quality time with your little ones.
