On your marks…get set…change! Grab your fluff, bundle up your little one, and join parents and tots across the world as the cloth diapering community comes together on Sunday, April 28 to take part in what’s become a much-anticipated yearly tradition: the annual Great Cloth Diaper Change! If you’ve been to one of Calgary’s GCDC events before, you know what to expect: an afternoon full of fun, learning, and parental comradery. And if you haven’t been to a Great Cloth Diaper Change? Well, you’re in for a treat.
Making Cloth Mainstream Since 2011
First, a bit of a history lesson, just to provide some context. The Great Cloth Diaper Change initially kicked off back in 2011 as a way to spread awareness around cloth diapering and the enormous impact that disposables have on landfills and the environment. Scheduled to coincide with Earth Day, the 2011 Great Cloth Diaper Change set a Guinness World Record for the “most people changing (cloth) diapers simultaneously…” with 5026 changes taking place in 127 locations across 5 different countries. Wow!
Following on the success of that first event, the Great Cloth Diaper Change continued to grow in size and scale every year, with each subsequent event breaking a new World Record all the way through to 2014. Then, in 2015, Guinness changed the way that World Records work and no longer accepted applications for 24-hour, multiple venue events. Undeterred, the Great Cloth Diaper Change marched on, continuing to boast thousands of cloth diaper changes around the world during each subsequent annual event. Now the event’s heading into its ninth year, and we need your help to make it bigger and better than ever.
